Chain Tree, Lakkidi

Chain Tree, Lakkidi is one of the best-known roadside heritage landmarks near the Thamarassery Ghat entrance to Wayanad district in Keralam. The attraction centres on a large ficus tree with a heavy chain fastened around its branches. Its importance comes largely from a long-standing local legend connected with Karinthandan, an indigenous guide said to have helped a British engineer find a route through the difficult forested ghat.

According to the story, Karinthandan was later killed and his restless spirit was eventually bound to the tree by a priest. The account is part of local folklore rather than documented history, but it has made the Chain Tree a recognizable cultural symbol of Lakkidi. The site is close to the road and can be combined with a visit to Lakkidi View Point, Vythiri and other attractions in this high-rainfall, green gateway region of Wayanad.
