Payammal Shathrughna Swami Temple is a small but distinctive pilgrimage shrine in the Payammal area of Thrissur district, Keralam. It is dedicated to Lord Shathrughna, the youngest of the four brothers in the Ramayana, and the Thrissur District Administration describes it as one of the relatively few temples in India centred on his worship. The temple’s greatest importance comes from the Nalambalam pilgrimage.
During Karkidakam, devotees traditionally visit four temples associated with the brothers of the Ramayana in a prescribed sequence: Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple, Koodalmanikyam Temple for Bharatha, Moozhikkulam Temple for Lakshmana and finally Payammal for Shathrughna. Completing the circuit gives Payammal a significance far beyond its modest rural scale. Visitors encounter a more intimate sacred atmosphere than at Keralam’s larger temple centres.
The surrounding Poomangalam area retains a village character, and the stop fits naturally into a full-day Nalambalam itinerary. Travellers should verify current temple opening times and follow local rules on dress, access and photography.
