Princess Street

Princess Street is one of the oldest streets in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala, and remains an important part of the neighbourhood’s walkable heritage character. Kerala Tourism describes the street as being lined with European-style bungalows and colonial buildings, many of which now accommodate cafés, restaurants, art galleries, curio shops, small stores and visitor accommodation. Faded plaster, old façades and narrow adjoining lanes give the area a lived-in quality rather than the feeling of a preserved museum district.

Loafer’s Corner, at the meeting of Princess Street, Peter Celli Street and Bastion Street, is a familiar local reference point and a good place to take in the streetscape. Princess Street is close to St. Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica, the Chinese fishing nets and Fort Kochi Beach, so it fits naturally into a self-guided heritage walk.

Its appeal lies in atmosphere, architecture and everyday street life.
