About Parade Ground
Parade Ground is a historic open space at Fort Kochi in Ernakulam district, Kerala, lying close to St. Francis Church and several colonial-era buildings. Kerala Tourism notes that the ground covers roughly four acres and was used successively by Portuguese, Dutch and British forces for military parades and drills.
Earlier known as Barraca Maidan, or the barracks ground, it changed character after Indian independence and became a venue for sports including cricket and football. The nearby VOC Gate, built by the Dutch East India Company in 1749, provides another visible reminder of the area’s Dutch period. Today the ground is best understood as part of the wider Fort Kochi heritage setting rather than as a monument requiring a long standalone visit.
It gives walkers an open view of surrounding historic structures and connects naturally with St. Francis Church, David Hall, Bastion Bungalow and nearby streets.
