About David Hall
David Hall occupies a prominent position beside Parade Ground in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala. Kerala Tourism dates the building to around 1695 and connects it with the Dutch East India Company and Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede, the Dutch governor remembered for encouraging the landmark botanical work Hortus Malabaricus. The hall later took its present name from David Koder, a Jewish businessman who occupied the property.
Architecturally, the building is valued for its thick masonry walls, four-column windows and distinctive timber roof structure, all characteristic of the Dutch-period built heritage of Fort Kochi. In more recent times, David Hall has been used as an art gallery and cultural venue, linking the neighbourhood’s historic architecture with its contemporary creative life. It can be combined easily with Parade Ground, St.
Francis Church, Princess Street and Bastion Bungalow on a heritage walk through old Kochi.
