Chendamangalam Synagogue

Chendamangalam Synagogue is one of the most important Jewish heritage sites in Ernakulam district, Kerala, located in the historic village of Chendamangalam. Kerala Tourism notes that the synagogue was associated with the Malabari Jewish community and was rebuilt in the early 17th century, although the site’s Jewish history is older. A Hebrew tombstone in the adjoining heritage area dates to 1269 CE, providing a remarkable surviving link to the community’s presence in Kerala.

The restored building now functions as the Kerala Jews Lifestyle Museum under the Muziris Heritage Project. Visitors can study the prayer space, the bimah used for Torah reading, carved stone pillars, wooden elements and displays explaining Jewish customs, songs, family life and religious practice in Kerala. The synagogue’s setting is equally significant: a temple, church and mosque stand nearby, making the Kottayil Kovilakam area a widely cited symbol of long-standing interfaith coexistence in the region.
