Bishop's House in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam, is a Portuguese-period heritage building dating to 1506 and used as the Bishop of Kochi’s residence since the late nineteenth century. Gothic architecture, historic interiors and church-history paintings make it a notable Fort Kochi landmark.
Bishop's House stands on a small hillock near Parade Ground in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district, Keralam. Keralam Tourism records that the building was originally constructed in 1506 as the residence of the Portuguese Governor. It passed through Dutch and later British-era ownership before Bishop Dom Jos Gomes Ferreira acquired it in 1888 for the Diocese of Kochi.
The house retains a strong heritage character through its large Gothic arches and pillars, long corridors, wooden staircases, stained glass and landscaped approach. A series of paintings inside narrates episodes connected with the development of the Catholic Church in Keralam. The adjacent Indo-Portuguese Museum further strengthens the area’s historic interest by interpreting Portuguese influence on local art and religious culture.
Bishop's House is therefore more than an architectural stop: it is part of the layered colonial, Christian and cultural history that gives Fort Kochi its distinctive identity.
