About Hermann Gundert Museum

Hermann Gundert Museum is housed in the historic Gundert Bungalow at Illikkunnu, a few kilometres from Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. The bungalow is closely associated with Dr Hermann Gundert, the German missionary, scholar and lexicographer who lived in the Thalassery area for nearly two decades from 1839 and made lasting contributions to Malayalam language and literature. The site also occupies an important place in Kerala’s printing history: the early Malayalam newspapers Rajyasamacharam and Paschimodayam were produced from the lithographic press established at the bungalow.

Today, the restored heritage property presents Gundert’s life and work through manuscripts, letters, books, personal belongings, archival material and other interpretive displays. Visitors can also appreciate the colonial-era character of the bungalow, with its tiled roof, broad verandas and spacious interiors. For travellers exploring Thalassery’s heritage circuit, Hermann Gundert Museum offers a focused introduction to the development of Malayalam publishing, scholarship and cross-cultural history in North Kerala.
