Kumbham Handicrafts Village

Kumbham Handicrafts Village is a craft-revival destination at Aruvacode near Nilambur in Malappuram district, Kerala. Kerala Tourism presents Kumbham as the organised revival movement that helped traditional potters respond to the decline of conventional earthenware markets. Initiated in 1993 by designer-activist K.

B. Jinan together with local artisans, the project encouraged experimentation with terracotta and expanded production into home décor, garden furniture, murals, reliefs, tiles and architectural elements. Kerala Tourism notes that the centre developed more than 500 designs and became an example of how traditional skills can be adapted without losing their cultural roots.

A visit offers a closer look at Kerala handicraft practice, community-based design and sustainable livelihoods. Kumbham and the wider Aruvacode pottery village are closely related but can be understood at different levels: Aruvacode is the artisan settlement, while Kumbham refers to the craft-revival centre and project within that tradition.
