Mananchira Square

Mananchira Square sits in the heart of Kozhikode city and brings together the city’s Zamorin-era history and its modern public life. The square is centred on Mananchira, a large man-made freshwater tank fed by a natural spring. Kerala Tourism records that the tank was built by the Zamorin ruler Mana Vikrama and that the surrounding area once formed part of the royal centre of Kozhikode.

Today, the water body is framed by a landscaped public park with lawns, trees, sculptures and spaces for cultural activity. Features described by Kerala Tourism include an open-air theatre, a musical fountain and traditional architectural elements that help retain the area’s old-world character. Historic buildings and civic institutions around Mananchira further strengthen the sense of place.
