Lokanarkavu Temple

Lokanarkavu Temple stands at Memunda near Vadakara in Kozhikode district, Kerala. The historic shrine is closely connected with the Vadakkan Pattukal, or Northern Ballads, whose heroes and heroines include Thacholi Othenan and Unniyarcha. Kerala Tourism and the Kozhikode district administration identify Goddess Durga as the principal deity and emphasise the temple's long association with Kalaripayattu and the martial traditions of North Malabar.

The temple complex is valued for its traditional Kerala architecture, murals, carvings and the atmosphere of a living place of worship. Two important annual observances are the Pooram festival and the Mandala-period festival, when the temple's cultural associations become especially visible. Lokanarkavu is also an anchor for a wider Vadakara heritage circuit that can include Payamkuttimala, Thacholi Manikkoth and Sand Banks Beach.
