About CSI Cathedral, Kozhikode

CSI Cathedral, Kozhikode is one of the city's important historic churches and serves as the mother church of the Church of South India's Diocese of Malabar. The Diocese records that the congregation was established in 1842 by Basel Mission missionaries and that the cathedral was dedicated in 1856. Its long association with the Basel Mission places the church within the wider nineteenth-century history of education, printing, social work and Protestant Christian activity in Malabar.

Located on Bank Road near the Mananchira–Tazhekkod area, the cathedral sits in the historic heart of Kozhikode, close to several civic and heritage landmarks. Architecturally, the church reflects a blend of European church design and local Kerala building traditions rather than a purely imported style. It continues to function as an active place of worship as well as a heritage landmark.

Visitors interested in Kozhikode's colonial-era urban history, Christian heritage and the Basel Mission's role in Malabar will find the cathedral a meaningful stop while exploring central Kozhikode.
