Mother of God Cathedral

Mother of God Cathedral is a prominent Roman Catholic landmark on Convent Road in Kozhikode, close to the historic city centre and Beach Road. Kerala Tourism records its early history in connection with the 1513 treaty between the Portuguese and the Zamorin, after which a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary was established and known as Matri Dei. The structure was rebuilt and enlarged over later centuries, and in 1923 it became the cathedral of the Diocese of Calicut.

Kerala Tourism describes Gothic-style design work associated with Italian architects, together with Neo-Roman features visible in the façade, towers, arches and colonnades. Another important feature is an old portrait of St Mary preserved in the church, while the adjoining cemetery adds further historical interest. Still an active place of worship, the cathedral should be visited respectfully, especially during services. It is a significant stop for understanding Kozhikode's Portuguese-era contacts and Christian heritage.
