Devikulam Hills and Sita Devi Lake

Devikulam is a serene hill destination near Munnar in Idukki district, located at roughly 1,800 metres above sea level. Its name is commonly interpreted as “lake of the goddess,” reflecting the local tradition that Sita Devi bathed in the lake here. The landscape combines tea gardens, forested hills, quiet roads and the small lake, creating a calmer atmosphere than central Munnar.

Keralam Tourism notes the area’s historical association with trout fishing, a pastime that was also popular during the plantation era; fishing is regulated and may require specific permission. Devikulam’s appeal lies in its mix of legend and landscape rather than in a single large attraction. Visitors can enjoy high-range views, cool weather and the atmosphere of an old plantation district while using the area as a quieter stop between Munnar and other Idukki attractions.

The lake should be understood as a scenic and culturally associated water body, not as a thermal spring.
