Why this place stands out
Thekkady is the main tourism hub beside Periyar Tiger Reserve near Kumily in Idukki, combining Periyar Lake boating, regulated wildlife experiences, Western Ghats forest and Keralam’s well-known spice-plantation landscape.
Thekkady is the principal visitor hub for the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Idukki district and lies close to Kumily in Peerumade taluk. The destination brings together several experiences that define this part of Keralam: protected Western Ghats forest, Periyar Lake, boating, regulated ecotourism and the surrounding spice-plantation landscape. District and Keralam Tourism sources promote lake cruises as a way to view the forested shoreline and, when conditions allow, observe wildlife from a respectful distance.
The wider Thekkady–Kumily area is also known for spice gardens and plantation scenery, so visitors can combine nature tourism with an introduction to crops such as cardamom and pepper. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and the strongest visitor experience comes from treating the reserve as a conservation landscape rather than a zoo. Boat tickets, trekking programmes and forest activities should be booked only through authorised channels.
The PIN has been corrected to 685509 during verification, matching official India Post and Keralam Revenue information for Thekkady/Kumily rather than the older 685536 value in the source file.
