Periyar Lake is the broad reservoir at the heart of the Thekkady tourism experience in Idukki district. Keralam Tourism describes it as an artificial lake associated with the Mullaperiyar dam, now surrounded by the protected forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. From the Thekkady boat landing, authorised cruises take visitors across calm stretches of water bordered by wooded slopes and the distinctive remains of old tree trunks rising from the reservoir.
The journey is valued as much for the scenery as for the chance of seeing animals or birds along the shoreline; wildlife appearances are natural and never guaranteed. Boating also allows large numbers of visitors to experience the reserve while remaining on a controlled route rather than moving independently through sensitive forest. Travellers should use official ticketing and follow boarding and safety instructions, particularly during busy holiday periods or changing weather.
