Nileshwaram

Nileshwaram is a historic town in Kasaragod district, Keralam, widely regarded as the district’s cultural capital. Once associated with the Nileshwar Rajas, it preserves palace traditions, sacred groves, temples, Theyyam culture, handloom heritage and easy access to backwaters and beaches. The town offers visitors a broad introduction to the living history and folk traditions of northern Keralam.

Why this place stands out

Nileshwaram is Kasaragod’s cultural capital, known for the legacy of the Nileshwar Rajas, historic kovilakoms, sacred groves, Theyyam, handlooms, backwaters and nearby beaches.

Nileshwaram lies in southern Kasaragod district and is one of the region’s most culturally important towns. Keralam Tourism describes it as the former headquarters of the Nileshwar Rajas and highlights surviving kovilakoms, or royal residences, including Thekke Kovilakom and other palace-linked sites. The Nileshwaram Palace now has a folklore role connected with the Department of Archaeology, reinforcing the town’s identity as a centre for traditional culture.

Nileshwaram is also known for sacred groves, temples, Theyyam performances and handloom traditions. Its location near backwater networks and the Arabian Sea means visitors can move easily between cultural heritage and nature-based experiences. Rather than a single monument, Nileshwaram works as a destination area best explored through several stops, local streets and nearby waterways.

It is an excellent base for Kottappuram Backwaters, Thaikadappuram Beach and other attractions in the southern Kasaragod tourism circuit.
