Illikkal Kallu is one of the best-known highland attractions in Kottayam district, set near Moonnilavu in the Meenachil region of Keralam. The destination is formed by a dramatic group of rocky hills rising to more than 4,000 feet, with distinctive formations traditionally identified as Kuda Kallu and Koonu Kallu. A narrow natural rock passage associated with the name Narakapalam adds to the place's rugged character, although visitors should follow local safety restrictions and avoid risky edges.
The drive into the hills passes through green uplands and opens to sweeping views across the Western Ghats and neighbouring valleys. Changing mist, cloud movement and late-afternoon light give Illikkal Kallu a different appearance through the day. It is primarily a landscape and viewpoint experience rather than a built attraction, making it especially appealing for scenic drives, photography and short hill excursions from Erattupetta and other parts of Kottayam.
