About Vaikom Mahadeva Temple

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is one of Kottayam district's major Shiva pilgrimage centres, located in the historic town of Vaikom. Keralam Tourism highlights the temple's antiquity, extensive traditional architecture and distinctive oval-shaped Sreekovil, a notable feature within Keralam temple design. The annual Vaikathashtami festival is the best-known religious event associated with the shrine and draws large numbers of devotees.

Vaikom also holds an important place in Keralam's social history because the town became associated with the Vaikom Satyagraha, although the temple visit itself remains primarily a living religious experience. The large compound, gateways and ritual spaces reward visitors interested in traditional architecture as well as pilgrimage. Temple customs can regulate entry to specific areas, clothing and photography, so current instructions at the site should always be followed.

Located within Vaikom town and close to the district's backwater belt, the temple can be combined with cultural and waterside exploration of northwestern Kottayam.
