About St. Mary's Cathedral, Manarcad

St. Mary’s Cathedral at Manarcad, often referred to as St. Mary’s Church or Manarcad Church, is a major Jacobite Syrian Christian pilgrimage centre in Kottayam district.

The Kottayam District administration identifies it as one of the important churches of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Christian community and notes its location about eight kilometres from Kottayam town. The church is most closely associated with Ettunompu, an eight-day period of fasting and prayer observed annually from September 1 to 8. During this period the church and surrounding roads receive large numbers of pilgrims, creating one of the region’s most recognisable Christian festival scenes.

Outside the feast season, visitors can experience the cathedral in a calmer setting and better appreciate its role in local religious life. Manarcad’s convenient location in Kottayam taluk also makes it easy to combine the visit with nearby churches, temples and city heritage sites. Visitors should plan for heavier traffic and crowds during the September observance.
