Thazhathangadi Heritage Zone

Thazhathangadi Heritage Zone lies along the Meenachil River a short distance from central Kottayam and preserves the memory of the town’s former role as a river-based trading centre. Keralam Tourism records that Thazhathangadi prospered particularly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when waterways were central to the movement of goods. Old merchant houses, many making extensive use of timber, still give sections of the neighbourhood a distinctive architectural character.

The heritage area also contains important religious landmarks, including the historic Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid, and sits close to Kottayam Valiyapally and Cheriapally. The river remains part of the area’s identity and is also associated with traditional boat-race culture. A visit is best experienced slowly on foot or by short local drives, observing houses, places of worship and the riverfront rather than expecting a single gated monument.
