Kalpathy Heritage Village

Kalpathy Heritage Village is an important cultural quarter of Palakkad, Keralam, built around traditional agraharam streets on the banks of the Kalpathy River. Keralam Tourism identifies Kalpathy as the state’s first heritage village and records its strong connection with Tamil Brahmin settlers from Thanjavur. The historic settlement is formed around four principal agraharams: Old Kalpathy, New Kalpathy, Chathapuram and Govindarajapuram.

Rows of traditional houses, temple-oriented streets and a living religious culture give the neighbourhood an architectural character unlike most modern parts of Palakkad city. The Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple is a central landmark, and the annual Kalpathy Ratholsavam or chariot festival is the village’s best-known cultural event, drawing attention to its Vedic Tamil traditions and historic temple network. Kalpathy is best experienced on foot, with time to notice domestic architecture, street proportions, shrines and the relationship between the river and settlement.

Visitors should remember that this is a living residential and worship area, not an open-air museum, and should photograph and explore respectfully.
