Bastion Bungalow

Bastion Bungalow stands in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district, on a site closely connected with the former European fortifications of Kochi. Kerala Tourism dates the building to 1667 and explains that it developed around the Stormberg Bastion, one of the surviving parts of the old fort after the Dutch captured Kochi from the Portuguese. The structure is admired for its long open verandahs, high ceilings, patterned tiled roof and construction using materials such as laterite, brick and wood.

Its architecture reflects the meeting of European building traditions with Kerala conditions and craftsmanship. The building survived later changes that removed much of the surrounding fort and was eventually recognised as a protected monument. Heritage displays, paintings, artefacts and interpretive material now give visitors a clearer picture of Fort Kochi’s Portuguese, Dutch and British periods.

Its location near the waterfront makes Bastion Bungalow a rewarding stop on a Fort Kochi heritage walk.
