Chendamangalam Heritage Area

Chendamangalam is a historic village in North Paravur, Ernakulam district, Kerala, and one of the key destinations within the Muziris Heritage Project. Kerala Tourism describes a distinctive landscape shaped by rivers, inlets, hillocks and green plains, together with a remarkable concentration of cultural monuments. The village is closely associated with the Paliam family, whose palace and traditional Nalukettu are preserved as museums.

Chendamangalam also contains the restored synagogue that now serves as the Kerala Jews Lifestyle Museum, as well as churches, temples, a mosque and a Jewish cemetery in the wider Kottayil Kovilakam area. This concentration of religious and civic heritage makes the village an especially strong example of Kerala’s long history of trade, migration and coexistence. Chendamangalam is also known for its handloom weaving tradition and GI-tagged textiles.
