Cheruthoni Dam

Cheruthoni Dam is a major component of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project in Idukki district, Keralam. Unlike the neighbouring Idukki Arch Dam, Cheruthoni is a concrete gravity dam and carries the reservoir’s principal spillway arrangement. Together with Idukki and Kulamavu dams, it helps impound the large reservoir that supports one of Keralam’s most significant hydroelectric systems.

For visitors, Cheruthoni offers a different perspective on the same mountain-and-reservoir landscape. The broad dam structure, deep valley, forested slopes and proximity to the arch dam create impressive views, while controlled releases through the spillway can demonstrate the enormous scale of the water-management system when officially operated. DTPC Idukki also promotes the dam area for its scenery and connection with the wider Idukki tourism circuit.

Access to dam premises is regulated for operational and security reasons, and visitor schedules can change. Travellers should check current official information before expecting entry to restricted sections. Hill View Park provides elevated views in the same area, while Idukki Park, the arch dam and nearby reservoir attractions allow visitors to understand the three-dam project as a connected landscape rather than isolated structures.
