About Anchuthengu Fort
Anchuthengu Fort, also known as Anjengo Fort, is a historic East India Company fort in the coastal settlement of Anchuthengu, Chirayinkeezhu taluk, Thiruvananthapuram district. Keralam Tourism records that the English established a trading settlement here in the late 17th century and completed the fort around 1699, using the site in connection with the region’s pepper and textile trade. The compact defensive structure, coastal position and surviving masonry help visitors visualise the period when European companies competed for influence along Keralam’s shoreline.
Anchuthengu is also linked with the 1721 uprising against the English, an important early episode in Keralam’s resistance history. Today the fort can be explored together with the fishing village, backwaters and nearby lighthouse, creating a layered heritage-and-coast itinerary. As with many old monuments, access to particular sections may be restricted for conservation or safety.
Visitors should avoid climbing fragile walls and allow time to appreciate both the architecture and the wider maritime landscape.
