Chalai Bazaar

Chalai Bazaar is a historic traditional market in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, immediately east of the East Fort heritage area. Keralam Tourism notes that the bazaar is associated with Raja Kesavadas, Dewan of Travancore, and is believed to have developed toward the end of the eighteenth century to support the commercial needs of the Travancore capital. Today its interconnected lanes remain intensely active, with traders selling spices, vegetables, flowers, kitchenware, textiles, household items, furniture and many other goods.

For visitors, Chalai is valuable not as a polished shopping mall but as a living market where the rhythms of the city are visible at close range. It can be combined easily with East Fort, Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple. Crowded lanes and active trading require patience, awareness of traffic and respect when photographing people.
