Cheraman Juma Masjid

Cheraman Juma Masjid stands at Methala near Kodungallur in Thrissur district, Kerala, within the historic Muziris cultural region. Kerala Tourism and local tradition identify it as India’s earliest mosque and traditionally date its foundation to 629 CE, although the site has been rebuilt and renovated repeatedly over the centuries. Its history is closely linked in tradition with Cheraman Perumal and the early maritime connections between Kerala and the Arab world.

The mosque is especially interesting for the way its surviving heritage reflects Kerala building traditions alongside Islamic religious use. Kerala Tourism highlights older wooden interior elements and the long-venerated oil lamp associated with the mosque. The complex also houses an Islamic History Museum developed as part of the Muziris Heritage Project, using visual displays to introduce the history of Islam in Kerala and the wider Kodungallur region.

Cheraman Juma Masjid welcomes interest from pilgrims and heritage travellers and can be combined with Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple, Kottappuram Fort and other Muziris sites. Visitors should dress respectfully and avoid disrupting prayer times or religious activities.
