Government Secretariat

Government Secretariat occupies a prominent position at Statue Junction on MG Road in central Thiruvananthapuram. The main historic building was completed in 1869 during the Travancore period and originally accommodated royal administrative functions, including the Durbar Hall tradition. Designed under the supervision of the then Travancore engineering establishment, the building shows Roman and Dutch-influenced architectural elements and remains one of Keralam’s best-known government landmarks.

After the formation of the modern state, the Secretariat became the central administrative headquarters for the Government of Keralam. For visitors, its significance lies in both architecture and political history: the long facade, formal grounds and surrounding statues make it a recognisable feature of the capital. Because the complex is a working government office with security controls, casual tourist entry to administrative areas should not be assumed.

The exterior is best appreciated during a walk along the city’s historic government and civic corridor, while official access requires compliance with current visitor procedures.
