Kalady River Ghat

Kalady is a major pilgrimage town on the banks of the Periyar River in Ernakulam district, Kerala, and its river ghats are closely tied to traditions surrounding Adi Shankaracharya. Kerala Tourism specifically identifies Crocodile Ghat as a place where, according to tradition, the young Shankara was caught by a crocodile and received his mother’s permission to accept sanyasa, or renunciation. That story gives the riverbank a spiritual importance beyond its scenic value.
