Kottakkunnu

Kottakkunnu rises in the heart of Malappuram city and is one of the district's best-known urban tourism attractions. Its name is commonly understood as the hill with a fort, recalling the Zamorin-era fort that once stood here; Keralam Tourism also records traces of old fortifications and other historic remains on the hill. The site is linked with Malappuram's anti-colonial history, including the execution of Variyam Kunnath Kunjahammed Haji during the period of British rule.

Today, Kottakkunnu has been developed as a family-friendly hill park with landscaped gardens, children's recreation, adventure facilities, a cycle track and the Arangu open-air auditorium. Weekend and festival evenings are especially popular because the elevated setting, city views and entertainment facilities create a relaxed gathering place for residents and travellers. Visitors interested in local culture can also note the murals at nearby Vettakkorumakan and Siva temples.
