Why this place stands out
Kottappuram Backwaters near Nileshwaram is a Kasaragod houseboat and river-cruise gateway to the Valiyaparamba-Kavvayi network, known for coconut-lined waterways and village scenery.
Kottappuram lies a short distance from Nileshwaram and serves as one of the principal access points to the Valiyaparamba-Kavvayi backwater network in northern Keralam. Keralam Tourism records that organised houseboat tourism began here in 2001 through the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation and has since expanded with a dedicated terminal under the wider Malabar River Cruise initiative. Cruises pass through broad and narrow waterways lined with coconut groves, fishing settlements and green village landscapes.
Depending on the service selected, visitors can experience shorter rides or longer houseboat journeys through the backwater system. The destination remains less commercialised than Keralam’s most famous central backwater centres, which is part of its appeal. Kottappuram is especially convenient for travellers staying around Nileshwaram and Kanhangad.
Boat availability, cruise duration and operations can change with season and monsoon conditions, so current schedules should be confirmed before travel.
