Kulamavu Dam is one of three dams forming the Idukki hydroelectric reservoir, offering scenic reservoir and forest views in the high ranges of Idukki, Keralam.
Kulamavu Dam is one of the three principal dams associated with the Idukki Hydroelectric Project, together with the Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthoni Dam. Located at Kulamavu in Idukki district, Keralam, the structure contributes to the reservoir system whose stored water is used for power generation at the Moolamattom underground power station.
The Kulamavu side of the reservoir has a quieter feel than the more frequently photographed arch-dam area. Forested slopes, high-range roads and stretches of reservoir water define the landscape, making the journey through Kulamavu part of the experience. Keralam Tourism describes Kulamavu Dam as a picturesque destination within the Idukki reservoir system, and it can be combined naturally with other attractions around Painavu, Cheruthoni and Idukki.
As with major water infrastructure elsewhere in the district, access near operational or secured portions of the dam may be restricted. Visitors should use authorised viewing areas and follow local instructions. Weather in the high ranges can change quickly, particularly during the monsoon, so road conditions and visibility should be considered when planning a drive through the Kulamavu region.
