Muchundi Mosque

Muchundi Mosque, also known as Muchundi Palli, stands in Kuttichira, Kozhikode's historic Muslim quarter. Kerala Tourism describes it as a 13th-century mosque and one of the oldest surviving Islamic monuments in the city. Unlike later mosque architecture dominated by domes and minarets, Muchundi reflects the regional building language of Kerala: a raised base, layered tiled roof, timber work, decorated gables and carved details that recall the craftsmanship seen in older temples and traditional houses.

A particularly significant feature is a stone inscription in old Malayalam Vattezhuthu script referring to property patronage associated with the Zamorin, evidence of the relationship between Kozhikode's rulers and its Muslim trading community. The mosque forms part of the wider Kuttichira heritage landscape, close to the tank and other historic mosques. Visitors should remember that it remains a functioning religious site; modest dress, quiet behaviour and respect for prayer times are essential.
