Nedumudy Backwaters

Nedumudi is one of the recognised villages of Kuttanad, the low-lying backwater and farming region that gives Alappuzha much of its international tourism identity. Kerala Tourism’s route directory locates Nedumudi in Alappuzha district, while its broader Kuttanad material includes the village among the region’s established settlements. The attraction here is the network of water and village life rather than a single landmark.

Canals and river channels sit alongside paddy fields, homes, jetties and roads, creating constantly changing views as boats and local traffic move through the area. Nedumudi has also been associated with Alappuzha’s boat-race culture, adding another layer to its water-based heritage. Visitors can explore from public routes or authorised boats, taking care not to enter private property or obstruct local jetties.

It is a strong choice for slow travel and for understanding Kuttanad beyond a short houseboat cruise.
