Nilapadu Thara

Nilapadu Thara is a key heritage site associated with the historic Mamankam festival in the Thirunavaya–Kodakkal area of Malappuram district, Kerala. Malappuram District Administration identifies it as the venue of Mamankam, while the Kerala Revenue Department’s Thirunavaya portal describes the site as the ceremonial ground connected with the festival and the political struggles that developed around control of it. Mamankam brought rulers, traders and large gatherings to the Bharathapuzha region and later became closely associated with conflicts between the Zamorin of Kozhikode and the Valluvanad side.

Nilapadu Thara is now recognised within Kerala’s protected Mamankam monument group. For visitors, its significance is historical and contextual rather than architectural grandeur. It is best visited as part of a Mamankam heritage circuit that also includes Manikkinar, Marunnara, Changampalli Kalari, Pazhukkamandapam and the wider sacred landscape of Thirunavaya.
