Why this place stands out
Pallipuram Fort is a Portuguese-built fort from 1503 at Pallippuram on Vypeen Island, Ernakulam, Keralam, also called Ayikotta or Alikotta and linked to the Muziris heritage region.
Pallipuram Fort stands at Pallippuram on the northern side of Vypeen Island in Ernakulam district, Keralam. Keralam Tourism identifies the fort as the oldest surviving European monument in India, built by the Portuguese in 1503 as a strategic outpost for monitoring maritime trade and vessel movement. The structure is compact but distinctive, with a hexagonal plan, laterite masonry and multiple levels.
A cellar beneath the lower floor is traditionally associated with storage of gunpowder. The Dutch captured the fort in the 17th century, and it later passed to the Travancore rulers before losing its military importance. Today the monument is part of the broader Muziris heritage narrative and is protected for its historical value.
A visit is especially rewarding for travellers interested in the Portuguese, Dutch and maritime history of Keralam. Pallipuram Fort can be combined with Cherai, Munambam and other Vypeen Island attractions in a single heritage-and-coast itinerary.
