Paravur Backwaters and Lake

Paravur Backwaters and Lake, often called Paravur Lake or Paravur Kayal, are an important part of the southern Kollam backwater landscape in Kerala. The lake is fed by the Ithikkara River and lies close to the Arabian Sea, with waterways extending towards the Kappil backwater corridor near the district boundary. This meeting of freshwater, brackish channels and coastal environments creates attractive scenery of mangroves, narrow waterways, sandbars and bird habitat.

DTPC Kollam promotes the area for activities such as boating, rafting and kayaking, allowing visitors to experience the backwaters at a slower scale than a large houseboat cruise. The destination is also useful for photographers and nature travellers interested in the transitions between river, lake and sea. Paravur town provides convenient access, while nearby beaches and the Kappil–Edava stretch make it easy to build a combined coast-and-backwater itinerary.

Visitors should use recognised operators and respect sensitive mangrove and wetland areas while enjoying the lake.
