Why this place stands out

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a 53-plus-square-kilometre protected forest and reservoir landscape in Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, supporting elephants, deer, birds and diverse Western Ghats habitats.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected Western Ghats landscape in Nedumangad taluk, Thiruvananthapuram district, centred on the forests and catchment around the Peppara reservoir on the Karamana River. Established in 1983, the sanctuary covers a little over 53 square kilometres according to Keralam Tourism and includes evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forest types across rugged terrain. Wildlife recorded in the area includes elephants, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, Malabar giant squirrels and a wide range of birds; larger predators also occur in the landscape, although sightings should never be expected.

Reservoir views and forested hills give Peppara strong scenic value in addition to its conservation importance. Trekking or deeper forest access is regulated, so visitors should use programmes permitted by the Keralam Forest Department and confirm current entry rules in advance. Quiet behaviour, no littering and respect for wildlife corridors are especially important in this active habitat.
