Peruvemba

Peruvemba, also written Peruvembu, is a Palakkad village with a remarkable two-century tradition of manufacturing leather-based percussion instruments. Skilled artisan families make chenda, maddalam, mridangam, idakka, timila and related instruments using carefully selected wood, traditionally including jackfruit, together with prepared hides. Keralam Tourism describes a labour-intensive process in which wood is seasoned, shaped and hollowed before skins are prepared, fitted and tuned with great precision.

These instruments travel from the village to performers involved in temple percussion, Carnatic music and other Keralam art forms. Peruvemba is also recognised as a Model Responsible Tourism Village, placing the craft within a wider experience of rural livelihood and cultural heritage. Visitors who are able to see an instrument workshop can appreciate not only the finished sound but the months of material knowledge and handwork behind it.
