Poomala Dam

Poomala Dam is an irrigation reservoir and leisure destination in the Mulankunnathukavu area of Thrissur district, roughly 12 kilometres east of Thrissur town. Kerala Tourism records that the Poomala reservoir scheme was commissioned in 1968 and that the dam premises were later developed as a tourist centre with beautification work carried out through the District Tourism Promotion Council. Visitor facilities have included a long walkway, community and refreshment amenities, while Kerala Tourism also highlights boating and other leisure activities at the reservoir.

The attraction is less about dramatic engineering and more about a calm water-and-hill setting where families can spend time outdoors, walk along the developed areas and enjoy the quieter side of Thrissur tourism. Poomala is included in the district’s official dam-tourism circuit with Chimmini, Peechi and Vazhani, and the route often concludes with sunset at Vilangan Kunnu. As with other reservoirs, access to specific activities can depend on water level and local operating conditions, so current availability should be checked at the site.
