Punalur Suspension Bridge

Punalur Suspension Bridge is a landmark 19th-century bridge across the Kallada River in Punalur, Kollam district, Keralam. Designed by British engineer Albert Henry, the 400-foot structure was built between 1871 and 1877 using iron, wood and masonry. Now preserved for pedestrians, it offers a memorable encounter with colonial-era engineering and Punalur's riverfront heritage.

About Punalur Suspension Bridge

Punalur Suspension Bridge spans the Kallada River in the town of Punalur, Kollam district, Keralam, and is one of the district's most recognisable heritage structures. Keralam Tourism records that construction began in 1871 during the reign of Travancore Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma and was completed in 1877 under British engineer Albert Henry. The approximately 400-foot bridge combines iron chains, wooden decking and masonry anchoring structures, with important materials brought from England.

It originally served both transport needs and the challenge of keeping wild animals from crossing into cultivated areas. The bridge is now a protected monument and is restricted to pedestrian use; restoration work was completed in 2014. Walking across its wooden deck gives visitors a close view of its engineering system as well as the Kallada River below.

It is particularly atmospheric when illuminated in the evening and pairs naturally with other Punalur attractions.
