Punnamada Lake

Punnamada Lake is one of the most recognised backwater locations in Alappuzha district, Kerala. It forms part of the larger Vembanad lake system and is closely associated with Alappuzha's houseboat tourism. The lake is especially famous as the venue of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, when long snake boats and large crowds transform the otherwise calm waterfront into one of Kerala's best-known sporting and cultural spectacles.

Outside the race season, Punnamada offers a quieter experience shaped by open water, boat jetties, houseboat movements and views toward settlements along the banks. Many backwater cruises in Alappuzha begin from or pass through the Punnamada area before continuing toward canals, villages and Kuttanad landscapes. Visitors who want the most peaceful experience may prefer a leisurely daytime or late-afternoon cruise, while those planning around the boat race should expect much heavier activity.
