Why this place stands out

Shankhumugham Beach is a major Thiruvananthapuram city beach known for Arabian Sea sunsets, the giant Matsya Kanyaka sculpture and important Hindu ritual traditions linked with the capital.

Shankhumugham Beach is one of the best-known beaches within Thiruvananthapuram city, Keralam, lying close to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and the Veli area. The wide sandy shore is especially popular in the evening when visitors gather to watch the sun set over the Arabian Sea. A major landmark is Matsya Kanyaka, the approximately 35-metre-long mermaid sculpture that has become closely associated with the beach.

Shankhumugham also has important ritual significance: it is regarded as the Arattukadavu connected with Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, and the shore is used for Bali Tharpanam and Ganesh immersion ceremonies on particular occasions. The beach is therefore both a leisure space and a living cultural landscape. Travellers can combine a visit with nearby Veli Tourist Village or other coastal attractions around the airport side of Thiruvananthapuram, while exercising normal caution around changing sea conditions.
