Why this place stands out

Bharananganam’s St. Alphonsa Shrine and St. Mary’s Church are a major Kottayam Catholic pilgrimage destination centred on the tomb and museum of St. Alphonsa.

Bharananganam in Kottayam district is closely identified with St. Alphonsa, whose tomb has made the village one of Keralam’s leading Catholic pilgrimage destinations. Keralam Tourism places St.

Mary’s Church on the banks of the Meenachil River and identifies Bharananganam as the final resting place of St. Alphonsa, the first woman of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. The shrine complex includes the tomb and a museum that helps visitors understand her life, spiritual journey and continuing importance to devotees.

Kottayam District records that her mortal remains were buried here in 1946 and that the site later became the St. Alphonsa Shrine following her canonization in 2008. The destination combines prayer, personal reflection and Christian heritage rather than conventional sightseeing.

Bharananganam lies in Meenachil taluk near Pala, making it accessible on a broader central Keralam pilgrimage route. Feast periods attract much larger crowds, while ordinary days offer a quieter and more contemplative visit.
