Why this place stands out
St. Mary’s Church, Kuravilangad, is an ancient Kottayam pilgrimage centre noted for historic artifacts, a large stone cross, old bell and the distinctive Kappalottam festival ritual.
St. Mary’s Church, Kuravilangad, also described by Keralam Tourism as Martha Mariam Church, is one of Kottayam district’s most historically significant Christian pilgrimage centres. Keralam Tourism traces the established church tradition to the fourth century and records repeated rebuilding, with the present architectural form taking shape in the twentieth century.
The site preserves a number of heritage objects, including an imposing stone cross, an old bell, a stone image of the Virgin Mary and a model ship linked with local tradition. Kuravilangad is also known for Kappalottam, a distinctive festival ritual in which a large wooden ship forms part of the celebration. The church therefore offers more than devotional importance: it provides insight into the way faith, maritime memory, architecture and community ritual have interacted in central Keralam.
Located in Meenachil taluk north of Kottayam town, it can be visited as part of a wider church and pilgrimage circuit. Visitors should respect worship schedules and festival crowd controls.
