About St. Thomas Church, Nilackal

St. Thomas Church, Nilackal, is associated with one of the oldest strands of Christian tradition in Keralam. Nilackal, historically called Chayal, lay along old trade routes connecting the Keralam region with the Tamil country and is traditionally counted among the places connected with the missionary journey of St.

Thomas the Apostle. The District Tourism Promotion Council notes that the original settlement declined long ago and that the present St. Thomas Ecumenical Church stands near Angamoozhy, close to Nilackal in the forested eastern part of Pathanamthitta district.

The church is especially notable for its ecumenical character, representing cooperation among several episcopal churches rather than a single denomination. The surrounding landscape also places the site within the wider Sabarimala–Nilackal pilgrimage region and the foothills of the Western Ghats. Visitors come for its spiritual meaning, Christian heritage and peaceful setting rather than for ornate architecture.

Road conditions and access can vary in this hilly area, so daytime travel is preferable.
