Thamarassery Churam

Thamarassery Churam is the historic ghat road that climbs from the Kozhikode side of the Western Ghats towards Lakkidi in Wayanad, Kerala. Kerala Tourism describes the pass as an approximately 14-kilometre stretch beginning around Adivaram and rising through nine hairpin bends to the highlands. The route is one of the principal road gateways linking Kozhikode with Wayanad.

Beyond its practical importance, the churam is valued for mountain scenery. Dense green slopes, changing mist, deep valley views and dramatic bends make the drive memorable, especially outside periods of heavy traffic. Kerala Tourism also places the pass within a much older trade route through the hills, with the modern road developing during the colonial period.

Travellers should treat the road itself as an active mountain highway, not a casual stopping area. Parking on bends, blocking traffic or standing in unsafe roadside positions should be avoided. During monsoon weather, visibility, landslide risk and road conditions may change quickly.

The Adivaram–Lakkidi drive is best enjoyed patiently, with scenic stops made only at safe and officially permitted places.
