Why this place stands out
Valiathura Beach and Pier is a historic Thiruvananthapuram seafront where a roughly 214-metre former port pier, fishing activity and Arabian Sea views reflect the city’s maritime heritage.
Valiathura Beach, on the coast of Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam, is closely associated with the historic Valiyathura Pier, a striking remnant of the capital’s former maritime importance. Before modern port facilities changed regional trade patterns, Valiathura served as a major port for southern Keralam. The concrete pier, about 214 metres long, once supported cargo handling operations for ships anchored offshore.
The port later lost its commercial role and was declared inactive in the 1980s, but the pier remains an evocative landmark against the Arabian Sea. Today the area functions primarily as a fishing neighbourhood and visitors can observe traditional coastal activity, waves breaking around the old structure and broad views along the shoreline. The combination of industrial heritage and everyday fishing life gives Valiathura a different character from resort-oriented beaches such as Kovalam.
Access conditions around an old marine structure can change, so visitors should respect any local restrictions near the pier.
