Vellayani Lake

Vellayani Lake, locally called Vellayani Kayal, is a freshwater lake on the southern side of Thiruvananthapuram city. Keralam Tourism identifies it as the district’s only freshwater lake and highlights boating, birdwatching and the surrounding wetland ecosystem as major attractions. Seasonal birdlife in the wider Vellayani–Punchakkari landscape makes the area especially interesting to nature watchers, while lotus-covered stretches and village scenery add to its photographic appeal.

During the Onam season the lake is associated with the Ayyankali boat race. A small bridge on the lake became widely known after appearing in the Malayalam film Kireedam and is now popularly called Kireedam Paalam. Keralam government health records confirm Vellayani P.O. with PIN 695522.

Visitors should remember that the lake is also an important local water and ecological resource and should avoid littering or disturbing wetland habitats.
